Isaac Roth Newspaper Carrier Scholarship

Application Information

New Jersey Press Foundation, the
charitable arm of the New Jersey Press Association, is offering
a college scholarship of $2,000 to a New Jersey youth or adult newspaper carrier or
to the child of a newspaper carrier.
Select the application form for the
category that describes you best. There are three categories to
choose from:
- Adult carriers who are currently enrolled as full-time
college students and plan to continue as full-time
students in the fall of 2009.

full-time students in the fall of 2010, 2011, 2012 or 2013.

currently are enrolled as
full-time college students or are high school students who
plan to attend college as full-time students in the fall
of 2010, 2011, 2012 or 2013.

The newspaper's
circulation director or a district
manager must send the NJPF a Route
Performance Questionnaire. Applications
without a Route Performance Questionnaires are incomplete and will not be sent
to the scholarship judges.

Application Criteria
- Newspapers sponsoring applicants must be members of New Jersey Newspaper Association.
Eligible newspapers
may nominate an unlimited number of applicants.
- A youth carrier must be at least 14 years old and be
enrolled in high school. The child of an adult carrier
must be at least 14 years old and be enrolled full-time
in high school or college. An adult carrier must be 18
years or older and be enrolled full-time in a college
(see categories above).
- The carrier must have been on route for the sponsoring
newspaper for at least two (2) years prior to May 15,
2010.
- Scholarships are awarded in one payment directly to the
appropriate institution of higher education. Scholarships
will be mailed during the summer. High school juniors,
sophomores or freshmen awarded scholarships must notify
the Press Foundation when they have been accepted by
the college they have chosen to attend.
- The judges will evaluate each application in the
following areas: citizenship, scholastic achievement,
route management and the essay. The judges' decisions are
final.
Instructions
To apply for the program, FIRST
read the instructions and checklist at the bottom the application. Then, fill out both pages of the
appropriate application form (see category list above). Print and save a copy of your completed application form, including the
instructions and checklist.
All parts of the application must be postmarked by
May 14, 2010, and mailed to:

Recommendation letters and academic credentials can be
submitted to New Jersey Press Foundation by regular mail
or attached to e-mail messages to:

Checklist to
Submit a Complete Application
Carefully read the application criteria and
instructions above. Send the following parts of your application,
postmarked by May 14, 2010, to New Jersey Press
Foundation (see address above).
2. One or
two short essays, answering these two questions:
A. How
has the content of your newspaper improved your school work and enhanced the personal lives of you
and your family? (To be written by the student applicant); AND B. Why
do you like being a carrier? (To be written by the newspaper carrier)
3.
Academic credentials. Youth carriers must submit
a copy of their high school grade transcripts or a typed list of their grades
and courses starting with 9th Grade. Adult carriers who are currently enrolled
as full-time college students must submit a copy of their college transcripts or
a typed list of their courses and grades. Children of adult carriers must submit
their high school or college transcripts or a typed list of their grades and
courses. The scholarship recipient will be required to submit an official
transcript or letter of acceptance by his or her college.
4. Newspaper sponsorship. The newspaper's
circulation
director or a district manager must send the Press Foundation a Route
Performance Questionnaire. Applications without Route
Performance Questionnaires will not be considered complete.
5.
Recommendations. A maximum of five letters from
the carrier's route customers and/or other people who know the applicant.
