The New Jersey Press Association (“NJPA”) press identification program is administered by NJPA for the purpose of providing identification (“NJPA Press Identification Card”) to eligible individuals for use in the performance of their professional activities as members of the news media.
Eligibility for an NJPA Press Identification Card is limited to individuals, including reporters, photographers, editors and publishers, performing newsgathering/reporting services on behalf of an NJPA member newspaper, member digital news organization, or associate member that either: (a) is a newspaper; or (b) provides news reporting services to a newspaper and/or a digital news organization (“Qualifying Associate Member”). Such newsgathering/reporting services shall include gathering, procuring, transmitting, compiling, editing, disseminating or publishing news for the public.
An NJPA Press Identification Card is solely intended for use to identify the holder as a member of the press performing newsgathering/reporting services on behalf of an NJPA member newspaper, member digital news organization, or Qualifying Associate Member. Access to locations, events or proceedings is determined by the authorities in charge at those locations, events or proceedings, not by NJPA.
Each NJPA Press Identification Card is valid for a maximum of one (1) calendar year, commencing on January 1 and terminating on December 31. Applicants must indicate on the application form whether they are applying for an NJPA Press Identification Card for the current calendar year or the following calendar year. NJPA Press Identification Cards issued for the current calendar year will be valid from the date the NJPA Press Identification Card is issued through December 31 of the current year. NJPA Press Identification Cards issued for the following calendar year will be valid for the entire calendar year from January 1 through December 31 of that year. For example, an application for issuance of a current year NJPA Press Identification Card that is approved and issued by NJPA on July 30, 2025 will be valid from July 30, 2025 through December 31, 2025. An application for issuance of an NJPA Press Identification Card for the following calendar year (2026) that is approved and issued by NJPA by October 1, 2025 will be valid from January 1, 2026 through December 31, 2026.
An NJPA member newspaper, member digital news organization, or Qualified Associate Member may submit a single form listing multiple applicants who perform newsgathering/reporting services on behalf of that member newspaper, member digital news organization, or Qualifying Associate Member (“Newspaper/Digital News Organization/Qualified Associate Application Form”) or the applicant may submit his/her own individual application (“Individual Application Form”).
As NJPA Press Identification Cards are only valid for a maximum of one calendar year, a new application (either by way of a Newspaper/Digital News Organization/Qualified Associate or an Individual Application Form) must be submitted for each new calendar year.
1 The time periods for which the NJPA Press Identification Cards are valid apply only:
